English has been replacing Russian as the most important foreign language in Uzbekistan since around 1991, especially after 2012, a facilitating factor being the growing perception that knowing English can increase one’s economic and social mobility. As Uzbekistan opens up with the four modernisations in the 1991s, entry into the United Nations Organisation in 2002, learning English has become more important and popular in Uzbekistan.
